Présentation de Douz

Douz est une ville du sud de la Tunisie connue comme la « porte du Sahara ». Durant l'Antiquité, il s'agit de l'oasis la plus importante de la région.

Rattachée administrativement au gouvernorat de Kébili, elle constitue une municipalité de 27 060 habitants.

Jusqu'à une période récente, elle est une escale importante pour les caravanes dans leurs voyages entre le Sahara et la Tunisie septentrionale. Elle est actuellement une destination de beaucoup de touristes venus visiter les dunes du Grand Erg Oriental.

La ville accueille l'un des marchés les plus caractéristiques du pays où sont quotidiennement vendus des produits artisanaux mais aussi, une fois par semaine, des ânes et des dromadaires. On y trouve également un musée ethnique qui illustre la vie des peuples qui vivaient dans le désert.

Économie[modifier]

L'économie de la ville dispose d'avantages particuliers par rapport aux villages environnants. La terre y est fertile et la culture de la datte est une grande source de revenus pour la population. Par ailleurs, les revenus découlant du commerce de l'oasis ont été facilement remplacés par les revenus du tourisme.

Festival du Sahara[modifier]

Chaque année, en novembre et décembre, se déroule le Festival international du Sahara qui rassemble les tribus nomades de Tunisie, d'Algérie, de Libye et d'Égypte. La manifestation folklorique, qui dure quatre jours, se déroule à la manière de Jeux Olympiques du désert. Elle s'ouvre avec un grand défilé suivi de chansons, de danses, de cérémonies et de mariages traditionnels. Par la suite ont lieu des courses de dromadaires, des démonstrations de la chasse au lapin à dos de cheval et de dromadaire. Les événements les plus spectaculaires, appelés « fantaisies », voient les cavaliers bédouins se chargent à travers le désert. Le tout est accompagné de divers spectacles artistiques et musicaux.
